Richard Dyer

Richard W. Dyer (born 1945) is an english academic studying cinema.

He was an influential figure in the english Gay liberation front.

Stars (1979) was Dyer's first full-length book.s ( stars) and that the reviews of the film and the publicity materials d determine they ay a viewer the film and so Dyer has analysed critics writing on medias such as magazines , advertising and experiences films.

Even though dyer specialises in film he has a wider interest in culture.

In it he developed the idea that the viewers' perception of a film is heavily influenced by the perception of its actor.
for example Richard Dyer- Spring breakers influences its audience into going out n being rebellious and acting in a similar way to the actors in the ilm. This is due to it being perceived as fun and achievable. These two things influence an audience into inspiring from it .

Although Dyer's academic specialism is film, he has a wider interest in culture and in the way that people are categorised. His 2001 book The Culture of Queers was a general history of the culture of gay men. He had explored aspects of this — like the origins of the application of the word 'gay' to this culture — in earlier essays. In the book he looked at the more general issue of a sexual grouping having an identifiable culture and at the relatively small set of stereotypes associated with that culture as portrayed in its arts and media. Specifically, he uses "queer culture" to indicate the values of that grouping before "gay culture" took hold, and the book explores the ways in which these two cultures differ.

Camera - no surprise- radio head

No surprise - Radio Head

Breaking or reinforcing conventions? Or both ? why ?

breaking as not stereotypical scenario- unexpected location - the camera only has one shot. Also there is no transitions. done in one long shot to smbolize that it is done all in one shot.- and then as there is no other frames tha woud of suggetsed that he is done it again - appreicate.

however he does lip sync which is common in music videos. - allows more emotion to emphasized as he is reflecting the words of the song.

there is lighting that change to reflect the emotions and  of the artist. starts of as blue to reflect that he is underwater- engages audience want them to be clear as to what it is as the location does not change. gets darker and then gets black. gets more depressing. suggesting the video is ending.

Concept and music ?

he is underwater - depressed - covered by something that he cannot escape as he is removed form it as the end suggest she has put himself under with this metaphorical meaning and then he brings himself to the surface - out of the surreal world?  been replenished - removed of sins?  reinforced by the smile at the end.

image- what is being sold through this concept

the water is bulidng is is 'drowning his sorrows'
then is no lyrics now as there is no ;yrics at that point.
ruins the realism of the piece. so
he  is not lip synching is faking it trying to exagerate csnt even lip synching anymore as he is drowning.
breking conventions can be sold as it is unexpected - engaging and rebelliou swhoch is thrilling.

he is not steretypviall attractive. -
eye contact - egaging relates th eaudicn into it.

the water is builiding up - everything is getting bigger.

human life can be taken away from you-easily- helpless- emotive image - not as attractive trying to symbolize an average man.  to entice everyone in . the music starts how it ends- through th visuals too as it goes back to the stars back to the begiging again - reincarnation.

begins with falshing led lights symbolic of stars in time with the instruemnt eba

the words ar ebackwars because htere facing him ? is r he reasding the lyrics? - helmet o and stars suggets he  is space.

the artist - constant close up of his face - audience will recognize this - he is being filmed in a surreal location - engages and interests the audience. he is underwater .

self reflexive- why does this apply

depressed- cannot escape  and then was able to escape- wants to be underneatht he water refecting. Trying to drown himself.

hyperesltiy - exagerating what it feel slike to be dperessed and then bring yourself out of it. through water being symbolic of feeling depressed sad, cant breahte, then coming up symbolic of being rpelenished of depression and can breahte again.

Mood Board - inspriation and idea's for music video

Dominating shots.

Within the music video- Ms Mr ' fantasy'

The dominating shots are medium shot/ medium close up shot. This is used to allow the audience to realize  who the artist is - as gernarlly the music video will be focused around this person. Additonally. thsi s thes artist prominence within the music video. Especially. when it is contrasted with the longer shots of the cheerleaders who are not as dominating charters due to it not be from there point of view and so the long sot does not focus on them all as clearly and prominently as a medium close up shot does of the music artist as she is communicating the love story form her point of view/ narrative.

Rudimental - Not giving in - bird eyes view shot- the music video is directed at an american/ english audience ( as the lyrics are spoken in english) therefore as the location is exotic in terms of the audience they are appealing too they are showing long shots and bird eye view to communicate to their audience where the music video is set.

Inspiration from music video's

Within the music video Ms MR - Fantasy. At the point   we wanted to use these type of shots within our music video at night, however we need to ensure that the shots are still good quality at night the characters will not be as visible. Therefore I researched into how an mage can still be good quality t night and found this technique on youtube. This will be something to consider suing with our music video.

This ensures that the image is still good quality by suing a light and covering it to create a light that surrounds the body and the face of the character. Also the light allows you to adjust where light should and shouldn't be focused. This will be a useful technique to use on the night scenes within the music video to ensure that the overall image looks good quality and that the characters are visible.

Inspiration from videos's

Haim - Falling the slow motion effect from onwards. From 2.30 onwards this effect we will be using within our music video with the main girl and the girls on either side of her that are symbolic of her conscious to do similar dance movement an motions which will then be edited into slow motion similarly to the video' falling' additionally we are taking inspiration from their clothing too. This is due to our video being set in natural locations and as the characters in this video are in natural locations there costumes would therefore be suitable of our music video too.

Additionally in terms of composition there is a main girl in the middle with two girls on either side of her this allows the girl in the video to gain prominence which is what we will do within our music video too. However the main girl will be in front of the other two girls to shows this.

Also in term of the charatcers are a similar age to the characters within our music video this is useful as the target audience is teenage girls,- young adults and so therefore they can take inspiration from the age of the characters within this music video as we want the audience to be able to relate to the characters through the same gender and age.
